Since 1959, the Grammy Awards are presented annually in numerous categories by the Recording Academy in the United States to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence, and overall outstanding performance regardless of album sales or chart position.
One of these categories was the Grammy Award for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album. The prize was awarded from 2008 to 2011. The winners included, in chronological order, Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience, BeauSoleil with Michael Doucet , Buckwheat Zydeco, and Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. No artist has received the award more than once. In addition to the performing artists, the sound engineers and / or producers were also honored. The band Pine Leaf Boys holds the record for most nominations with four nominations, but has not received any award. Doucet and Cedric Watson each received three nominations. 2009 was the only year that a musician received more than one nomination, and the only time that two artists were nominated for works on the same album - Doucet was nominated as a member of BeauSoleil for Live at the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival as well for his solo album From Now On and Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys were also nominated for their contribution to the compilation album of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Many of the nominated artists were from Louisiana , especially Lafayette .
According to Cody Daigle of The Daily Advertiser , proponents spent nearly seven years campaigning to create a Grammy category specifically for Zydeco and Cajun music. The effort was led by musician Terrance Simien along with his wife and manager, Cynthia. Mitch Landrieu , then Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana , also supported the effort. Cynthia, a trustee of the Recording Academy in Memphis, said hundreds of dollars and hours were invested in what she described as an "uphill battle." Before there was the Grammy Award for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album , works of the genre were considered in the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album or Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album .
