The Grammy Award for Best Gospel / Contemporary Christian Music Performance , in German "Grammy award for the best performance in the field of gospel music / Christian pop music", is a music award that was awarded from 1968 to 1977 and from 2005 to 2014 by the American Recording Academy im the field of gospel music / Contemporary Christian music was awarded.
History and background
Since 1959, the Grammy Awards are presented annually in numerous categories by the Recording Academy in the United States to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence, and overall excellence regardless of album sales or chart position.
One of these categories was the Grammy Award for Best Gospel / Contemporary Christian Music Performance . The award was first given in 1968 under the name Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance and only given for albums. In 1971 the award was renamed the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance (other than soul gospel) , awarded for albums and singles. He kept this designation until 1977. In 1978 the award was divided into the two new categories Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Traditional and Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Contemporary . The original category was revived in 2005 and given the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance . After a major overhaul of the Grammy categories, the 2012 award was renamed the Grammy Award for Best Gospel / Contemporary Christian Music Performance and was used until 2014. In 2015 the music genres gospel and Christian pop music were restructured again and the new Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance / Song was created.
The Blackwood Brothers hold the record for most awards in this category with four wins, two of which with Porter Wagoner . They also hold the record for most nominations with seven. Two-time winners include Porter Wagoner, The Oak Ridge Boys , Karen Clark Sheard, and CeCe Winans .
