Grammy Legend Award

The Grammy Legend Award, or Grammy Living Legend Award , is a special award from the annual Grammy Awards that is given irregularly to selected artists who have continued special influence on the music.

History and background

The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards), which have been presented since 1958, are presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America for artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of the album - Honor sales or chart position.

The first Grammy Legend Awards were given to Andrew Lloyd Webber , Liza Minnelli , Smokey Robinson, and Willie Nelson in 1990 . The award was introduced to honor artists with ongoing contributions to the music ("ongoing contributions and influence in the recording field"). In the following year, four other artists were honored with Aretha Franklin , Billy Joel , Johnny Cash and Quincy Jones , followed by Barbra Streisand in 1992 and Michael Jackson in 1993 . After Curtis Mayfield and Frank Sinatra were honored in 1994 , the award was given irregularly in the following years. In 1998 the Italian opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti received the award, the following year it went to the British Elton John . The Bee Gees , which were honored in 2003, were the first band to be honored with the award.

Independent of the Grammy Legend Award, NARAS also awards the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award , which is why many musicians have received both awards.
