Brief report:
At kilometer 20 a top group of twelve had formed, including defending champion Stefano Baldini . After increasing the pace shortly after the half-time mark, four runners took the lead: Viktor Röthlin , José Manuel Martínez , Ruggero Pertile and the Frenchman James Theury . Baldini couldn't keep up and got out. Shortly after Pertile had to let go, Röthlin took the lead at kilometer 28 and continuously expanded his lead right through to the finish. Theury, on the other hand, had overdone himself, kept falling back and finally gave up. Pertile fought his way up to Martínez again for a short time, but then, plagued by cramps, fell behind Dmitri Safronov , who had worked his way up from sixth place, in the last few kilometers . The Austrian Günther Weidlinger , who had belonged to the top group up to kilometer 20, then fell continuously and finished in 18th place. With temperatures of more than 25 ° C it was the slowest winning time since the European Championships in 1969. The difficult external conditions also contributed to the fact that 19 of the 64 athletes who started did not reach the finish line, including the Germans Martin Beckmann and Tobias Sauter and the Austrian Florian Prüller . The Liechtensteiner Marcel Tschopp came in 39th, the Austrian Christian Pflügl in 44th.

Brief report:
Walking 20 kilometers was the first decision of the European Championships. 19-year-old Stanislaw Jemeljanow was one of the favorites along with Alex Schwazer , and both of them stayed in the top group from the start. Halfway through the race, Jemelyanov pulled away slightly and steadily expanded his lead to an initially seven-walker group of leaders. He won safely in 1:20:10 h from Schwazer and the Portuguese João Vieira , who had to take an involuntary break to tie his shoes at the beginning of the race. The German Maik Berger from SCC Berlin finished sixteenth, André Höhne did not start. Participants from Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland did not start.
Doping:
On July 29, 2014, it was announced that Stanislaw Jemeljanow would be deprived of all results from July 26, 2010 due to abnormal blood values in his “biological passport” , including the gold medal at the 20 km walk in Barcelona.
