In 2002 he became German marathon champion at the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:16:07 h and took 23rd place overall.

The following year he was tenth in the Hamburg Marathon in 2:15:14 h, and in 2004 he was 21st in Berlin in 2:15:06 h.

In 2005, the graduate in business administration decided to become a full professional. The following year he finished second in the Düsseldorf Marathon , but with his time of 2:17:00 h could not qualify for the 2006 European Championships . At the Baden Marathon he then won the half marathon route in 1:04:47 hours.

At the Hamburg Marathon 2007 he finished 17th with a time of 2:15:22 h and narrowly missed the norm of the German Athletics Association (DLV) for the World Athletics Championships in 2007 - yet he achieved the best with this time Result of a German athlete this year.
But since he fulfilled the IAAF norm (2:18 h) and the DLV decided to issue a team for the marathon race, he was nominated for Osaka together with Mario Kröckert and Ulrich Steidl .

Since Mario Kröckert was unable to take part in the World Championships due to injury, Beckmann and Steidl entered the race as individual starters. In the humid heat, Beckmann, like 27 others of the 85 runners who had started, had to give up on the way (at kilometer 30).

In 2008 he became German champion in the half marathon and, as third overall in the Gutenberg marathon with a time of 2:18:26 h, he became German marathon champion for the second time. At the end of the season he came 20th in the Frankfurt Marathon and improved his personal record to 2:14:30 h.

In 2009 he climbed sixth in the Düsseldorf Marathon again to 2:13:42 h and was nominated for the World Championships in Berlin . There he reached 34th place with a time of 2:18:08 h.

In 2010 he finished 19th in the Berlin Half Marathon and set his personal best over this distance with 1:03:57 h. At the marathon of the European Championships in Barcelona he gave up after 19 km.

Martin Beckmann is 1.80 m tall and weighs 67 kg. He starts for the LG Leinfelden-Echterdingen and is trained by Heidrun Vetter in cooperation with Waldemar Cierpinski . So far he has won the Stuttgart run eight times (2002, 2004 to 2009, 2013), whereby in 2006, 2007 and 2009 his current wife Stephanie (née Maier ) was also victorious in the women.
