Martin Josef Beckmann (born July 5, 1924 in Ratingen ; † April 11, 2017 ) was a German economist whose work deals, among other things, with business mathematics , operations research and regional and transport economics. He held professorships at Brown University , the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Technical University of Munich . In 1957, Tjalling C. Koopmans and Beckmann formulated a variant of the quadratic assignment problem relevant to location theory , also known as the Koopmans-Beckmann problem .

academic career

Beckmann first studied mathematics and physics at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1950 he received his doctorate in economics under Walter Eucken at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . As an assistant to Leonhard Miksch , he dealt for the first time with regional economics (in the form of German spatial economics), which shaped his further academic career.

At the end of 1950 he went to the University of Chicago as a postdoctoral fellow, at which time the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics , an influential research group led by Tjalling C. Koopmans, was also based. From 1955 to 1956 Beckmann was a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University before moving to Yale University , which is now home to the Cowles Commission. Beckmann finally became a professor at Brown University in 1959. In addition to this position, he received a chair for econometrics and business research at the University of Bonn in 1963, and in 1969 he accepted a call from the Technical University of Munich, where he continued to be a professor at Brown University. In 1989 he was at both universities emeritus .

Numerous well-known students emerged from Beckmann's academic environment, such as Karl Mosler and others

Awards and honors

Beckmann received various awards, including the Founder's Medal of the Regional Science Association in 1983 and the August Lösch Ring of Honor from the city of Heidenheim an der Brenz in 1998 . The University of Karlsruhe , the University of Umeå and the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 1958 he became an elected member ( Fellow ) of the Econometric Society .
