Matthias de Zordo (born February 21, 1988 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a German javelin thrower . He became world champion in 2011.
career path
De Zordo completed a voluntary social year in sport at SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken from 2006 to 2007 and was a member of the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Mainz. At the beginning of January 2018 he announced that he had started training as an athletic trainer at the BSA Academy in order to start his professional life.
Life
Matthias de Zordo grew up in Langenlonsheim near Bad Kreuznach and started throwing the javelin at the age of eleven. At the age of 18, de Zordo won the title at the German Junior Championships 2006 in Bautzen with a width of 71.67 m. He defended the title in 2007 against his favorite club mate Alexander Vieweg with 77.94 m. A month earlier, de Zordo won the title at the U20 European Championships in Hengelo with 78.59 m. In June of that year he had already increased his best performance to the German youth record of 78.67 m and also won the title at the German youth championships that year. In 2008 he improved to 82.51 m at the throwing days in Halle , this was his first throw over the 80-meter mark and again he won the German Junior Championships. In 2009 de Zordo became military world champion in Sofia with a width of 79.92 m, then German runner-up and for the fourth time in a row German junior champion. But in 2009 he stayed at an annual best of 80.15 m.
In 2010, de Zordo managed to qualify for the European Championships in Barcelona for the first time on May 22, 2010 in Saarbrücken with 81.58 m. Two days later, the second standard fulfillment followed with a new personal best of 83.09 m at the Whitsun Sports Festival in Rehlingen , before two weeks later he threw himself into the circle of the expanded world elite with a further increase to 84.38 m. In June he surprisingly beat world champion Andreas Thorkildsen with a width of 83.80 m as part of the European team championship in Bergen . Three weeks later he was the first German master in the main class of men. At the European Championships in Barcelona on July 31, 2010 he won the silver medal in the javelin throw with 87.81 m and a new personal best.
De Zordo defended his German championship title in 2011 in Kassel. At the World Championships in Daegu , he defeated the reigning Olympic champion Thorkildsen again on September 3, 2011, making him world champion in javelin throw. With a new personal best of 88.36 m, he won the Diamond League final in Brussels on September 16, 2011 . With this he overtook Andreas Thorkildsen in the overall standings and secured victory in the 2011 Diamond Race.
For the 2012 Olympic Games in London , de Zordo could not qualify regularly due to a capsule injury on the limb that was only contracted in June, but was nevertheless nominated by the German Olympic Sports Confederation by exception. On August 8, 2012, he stayed below the 80-meter mark in all three qualification throws and invalidated these attempts by crossing them, which were insufficient for the final.
De Zordo started his career at TV Langenlonsheim, supported by his first trainer Thomas Braun. Both later switched to MTV Bad Kreuznach. In addition to athletics, he also played handball at HGC Bad Kreuznach . In 2007 the 1.90 m tall and 98 kg heavy athlete started for SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken , where he was trained by Boris Henry . Matthias de Zordo has been a member of SC Magdeburg since 2013 . His new trainer is Ralf Wollbrück. As one of the few top javelin throwers in the world, Matthias de Zordo is left-handed. In 2011, with 88.36 m, he achieved the longest throw by a left-hander to date. This mark was only exceeded in 2018 by the Estonian Magnus Kirt with a width of 88.45 m. In his competitions, he usually wears the same wool hat that he calls his lucky hat.
In 2016, de Zordo made his comeback after years of injury problems, but could no longer stay in the DLV's B squad due to the long injury period, which meant he could no longer remain in the Bundeswehr's sports promotion group.
