MusiCares Person of the Year is an award given annually in the United States by MusiCares , the Recording Academy's charity .

History and background

The Recording Academy , headquartered in Santa Monica , California , has presented the Grammy Awards annually since 1959 to recognize artistic achievement, technical expertise, and overall outstanding performance regardless of album sales or chart position.

In addition to these grand prizes for recordings and works from a specific year, the Recording Academy also awards several personal prizes, including the Lifetime Achievement Award , the Lifetime Achievement Award , the Grammy Trustees Award , the Technical Grammy Award , the Grammy Legend Award, and since 1991 - over her charity MusiCares - the MusiCares Person of the Year award .

The MusiCares Person of the Year award recognizes musicians for their artistic achievements in the music industry and for their charitable work. The name of the award reflects the mission of the MusiCares organization, which was founded by the Recording Academy to “provide health care and medical assistance to musicians in need”. The winners selected by the MusiCares Foundation will be honored with an “All-Star Concert” during “Grammy Week” (a series of gala events shortly before the annual Grammy Awards ceremony). The income from the concerts goes into the work of the foundation.

From 1991 to 1993 the first three awards were given to the American musicians David Crosby , Bonnie Raitt and Natalie Cole . The Cuban American singer Gloria Estefan received the award in 1994, followed by the Americans Tony Bennett and Quincy Jones . Between 1997 and 2004 the prize went to British musician Phil Collins , Elton John and Sting , the Italian opera - Tenor Luciano Pavarotti , the Americans Stevie Wonder , Paul Simon and Billy Joel and Irish musician Bono . Other Americans received the award between 2005 and 2009 - Brian Wilson , James Taylor , Don Henley , Aretha Franklin and Neil Diamond . The Canadian Neil Young received the award in 2010, Barbra Streisand , Sir Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen were honored in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Carole King received the award in 2014, followed by Bob Dylan in 2015. Lionel Richie was named a winner in 2016, followed by Tom Petty in 2017. The 2018 winner, Fleetwood Mac , became the first rock band to win the award. In 2019, Dolly Parton became the first country artist to receive the award.
