from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grammy Award for Best Urban / Alternative Performance , in German roughly “Grammy Award for the best urban / alternative performance”, is a music prize that has been awarded at the annual Grammy Awards since 2003 . Performances from the urban / alternative music (contemporary R&B) with singing were awarded. Since 2012, this award has been added to the Best R&B Performance category.

Background and story

The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards), which have been presented since 1958, are presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America for artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of the album - Honor sales or chart position.

Erykah Badu has been nominated three times for a Grammy, but has never received it.

The Grammy Award for Best Urban / Alternative Performance was first given to India.Arie at the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2003 for her song Little Things . According to the price description, it was awarded to artists who presented newly recorded performances from the urban / alternative music field with singing. The aim is to honor artists who are influenced by an area of urban music and who presented music that is outside the mainstream . This award has not been awarded since the Grammy Awards in 2012 because it was added to the Best R&B Performance category.

India.Arie won the first Grammy in this category and, along with Jill Scott and Cee-Lo Green (once as part of the duo Gnarls Barkley and once as a solo artist), is one of the artists to have received the award twice so far. The record for the most nominations is shared by Erykah Badu , Big Boi (once as part of OutKast ) and will.i.am (once as a member of The Black Eyed Peas ), who were each nominated three times. Erykah Badu is thus also the artist with the most nominations without ever having received the award. The only artists nominated twice in a year are Sérgio Mendes and will.i.am, both of whom were jointly involved in both nominated titles. The award was dominated by American artists, but with Damian Marley it was also won by a Jamaican, and Dobet Gnahoré (duet partner of India.Arie) comes from the Ivory Coast .
