Damian Marley
Damian Robert Nesta Marley called Jr. Gong (* 21st July 1978 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican reggae - musician . He is the youngest son of Bob Marley and the former Miss World Cindy Breakspeare . The name Jr. Gong is based on his father's nickname, Tuff Gong .
Life
Marley began making music at the age of 13, first in the band The Shepherds , which was founded together with the sons of other famous reggae musicians , and later both with his Marley brothers and as a successful solo artist. It is particularly popular in the USA ; the “Welcome to Jamrock” tour took him to Germany for the first time in the spring of 2006. In the same year and in 2015 he also appeared at the Summerjam .
Musical career
With the record label Tuff Gong, which was founded by Bob Marley and his band The Wailers , he released his first album Mr. Marley in 1996 . His brother Stephen Marley was instrumental as a producer and co-author. For his second album Halfway Tree and his third album Welcome to Jamrock , he received the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2002 and 2006, respectively .
In 2010 he recorded the album Distant Relatives with Nas . The title refers primarily to their common African origins. The proceeds from the album will be used to build schools in the Congo.
In 2017 he published Stony Hill.
Welcome to Jamrock
Welcome to Jamrock was the song that gave Damian Marley his breakthrough and general recognition in the reggae scene. He made Ini Kamoze's “Worldjam Riddim ” so popular that, within a very short time, many tracks from the reggae, jungle / drum and bass and hip-hop scene started using this riddim. The bass line and the heckling “out in the streets, they call it merther!” Are striking.
style
Unlike most of his brothers, Damian Marley doesn't just limit himself musically to his father's domain, roots reggae , but also processes numerous other influences, mainly from dancehall and R'n'B . His vocal style is strongly influenced by the Jamaican MCing, toasting . On his debut album, Mr Marley , he surprised reggae fans with an unfamiliar deejay style. He himself describes his music as “Dancehall and Reggae”, but does not try to separate it: “I've noticed… people trying to separate the two of them (Reggae and Dancehall). It's Jamaican culture in general. I don't try to classify or separate. "
