Wayne Marshall (born January 13, 1961 in Oldham near Manchester ) is an English pianist , organist , conductor and composer .

Life

After attending Chetham's School in Manchester, he began organ training at Manchester Cathedral. Further studies followed at the Royal College of Music with Nicholas Danby (organ) and Angus Morrison (piano) as well as at the University of Music in Vienna . He passed his exams with distinction. Marshall has given concerts as organist in Notre Dame de Paris , the Royal Festival Hall and Westminster Abbey, among others . He is organist in residence at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester .

As a pianist, he has performed with Kim Criswell , Tasmin Little , Natalie Clein , Ole Edvard Antonsen and Willard White in addition to solo concerts . He has conducted the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic , the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the Dresden Philharmonic , the Staatskapelle Halle and the orchestras of Bordeaux and Lyon . His programs often feature works by George Gershwin , Duke Ellington and Leonard Bernstein . He has been the new chief conductor of the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln since the 2014/15 season.

The compositions Magnificat and Nunc dimittis come from him . Marshall received as awards the Honorary Doctorate of the University of Bournemouth and was Artist of the Year of the BBC (1998).

Private

Marshall is married to a Maltese and the family lives in Valletta .
