Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album
The Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album , in German "Grammy award for the best musical album", is a music prize that has been awarded by the American Recording Academy in the field of musical theater / musicals since 1959 .
History and background
Since 1959, the Grammy Awards are presented annually in numerous categories by the Recording Academy in the United States to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence, and overall outstanding performance regardless of album sales or chart position.
One of these categories is the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. The prize has been awarded since 1959 and goes to the producer of the album as well as to the composer and lyricist of the work. The prerequisite is that at least 51% of the music has not yet been recorded.
Over the years the award has seen numerous minor name changes:
- In 1959 the award was under the name Best Original Cast Album (Broadway or TV) awarded
- 1960 was called Best Broadway Show Album
- 1961 he called himself Best Show Album (Original Cast)
- From 1962 to 1963 he was a Best Original Cast Show Album award
- From 1964 to 1973 it was called Best Score From an Original Cast Show Album
- From 1974 to 1975, the award was for Best Score From the Original Cast Show Album called
- From 1976 to 1986 the name was Best Cast Show Album
- From 1987 to 1991 the award was called Best Musical Cast Show Album
- From 1992 to 2011 the award took place under the name Best Musical Show Album
- The current name Best Musical Theater Album has been used since 2012 .
