Kelli Christine O'Hara (born April 16, 1976 in Elk City , Oklahoma ) is an American actress and singer .

Since making her Broadway debut as an understudy in Jekyll & Hyde in 2000, she has appeared in many musicals on Broadway and Off-Broadway. She has appeared in television and film, among others, and had an appearance with the Metropolitan Opera . In 2018 she will make her debut in the West End.

O'Hara has received six Tony Award nominations , first for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for the 2005 production of The Light in the Piazza . Her subsequent nominations have been for The Pajama Game (2006), South Pacific (2008), Nice Work If You Can Get it (2012) and the Bridges of Madison County (2014) before the Tony Award in 2015 for best actress in a musical revival in that of the King and I won. O'Hara has also appeared on television series such as Masters of Sex and Dead Girls Don't Lie , films such as Sex and the City 2, and operas such as The Merry Widow and Così fan tutte .

Life

O'Hara was born on April 16, 1976 in Elk City , Oklahoma, and grew up in an Irish-American family. After graduating from Deer Creek High School, she attended Oklahoma City University , where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in music and vocal performance / opera. O'Hara studied singing with Florence Birdwell , who had taught Kristin Chenoweth four years earlier . O'Hara and Chenoweth are both alumni of the Gamma Phi Beta Sisterhood.

O'Hara is married to Greg Naughton of The Sweet Remains , son of actor James Naughton . Their first child, Owen James, was born in 2009. Their second child, a daughter named Charlotte, was born in 2013.

Career

One of O'Hara's earliest professional roles was on a US national tour of the musical Jekyll & Hyde . She then played the role of young Hattie in the 2001 Broadway revival of Follies and then played the role of young Phyllis. Her next appearance was in 2002 as Susen in the Broadway production of Sweet Smell of Success . In 2003 she played Albertine in the off-Broadway Playwrights Horizons production of the musical My Life With Albertine , and in 2004 Lucy Westenra in the Broadway production of Dracula . She starred as Clara in the 2005 Broadway production of The Light in the Piazza at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center . She appeared in a workshop of the musical at the Theater Lab in Sundance and in test runs in Seattle and Chicago as the character of Franca.

She also received her first Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical in 2005. Since that nomination, she has been nominated for or won a Tony Award for all subsequent Broadway appearances. In her next Broadway musical, she played Babe in the remake of The Pajama Game , for which she was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical .

In 2007 O'Hara played Dot / Marie in the Los Angeles Reprise! Concert production of Sunday in the Park with George and Eliza Doolittle in the New York Philharmonic's semi-staged production of My Fair Lady at David Geffen Hall . She was the voice of producer Beth Totenbag on the 2008 PBS animated series Click and Clack's As the Wrench Turns . From 2008 to 2010 O'Hara starred as Nellie Forbush in the South Pacific Broadway Revival at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center, for which she received her third Tony Award nomination. She took maternity leave in March 2009 and returned to the musical in October 2009.

O'Hara played Ella Peterson in the 2010 concert launch of Bells Are Ringing at New York City Center Encores! . She played the role of Ellen in Sex and the City 2 (2010) and appeared in the first episode of the second season of Mercy in 2011 on the CBS show Blue Bloods. Also in 2011 she played the role of Amalia in a benefit concert by She Loves Me , presented by the Roundabout Theater Company , in honor of the company's 20th anniversary. Scott Ellis directed and the musical director was Paul Gemignani . You had one of the most famous songs on the show, Will He Like Me? , performed the night before at the Kennedy Center in honor of Barbara Cook .

She played on Broadway as Billie Bendix in Nice Work If You Can Get It from April 2012 to March 2013, for which she received her fourth Tony Award nomination. At the New Year's Eve concert Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch at Lincoln Center in 2012 she sang with Audra McDonald and Megan Hilty At the Ballet from A Chorus Line . In 2013, she played the main character Julie in the New York Philharmonic 's Carousel Concert at Avery Fisher Hall . From January to May 2014, she played as Francesca Johnson in the Broadway musical The Bridges of Madison County , for which she received her fifth Tony Award nomination. She played Mrs. Darling on the 2014 NBC show Peter Pan Live! . She sang two concerts titled Kelli and Matthew: Home for the Holidays in December 2014 at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops . 31 December 2014 O'Hara made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Valencienne in Franz Lehar's The Merry Widow alongside Renee Fleming in the title role.

O'Hara appeared at the Lincoln Center Theater as Anna Leonowens in the Broadway revival of The King and I with Ken Watanabe as The King. Production began at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in March 2015 and opened in April 2015. For this role, O'Hara received her first Tony Award. O'Hara's last appearance as Anna was in April 2016. She made her debut solo concert at Carnegie Hall in October 2016 and appeared on Season 4 of Masters of Sex as a recurring character Dody. She played Fiona in the Encores! Production of Brigadoon in New York City Center in November 2017. Jeremy Gerard from Deadline Hollywood called O'Hara's performance "bright", in writing: "O'Hara is incredibly beautiful, vocal and conveys Fiona's romantic determination and lovesickness."

O'Hara appeared in the second season of Dead Girls Don't Lie in 2018 as Jackie, an anti-bullying advocate. In the same year she sang the role of Despina in Così fan tutte at the Metropolitan Opera . She plans to return to her role in The King and I at the London Palladium for a limited period from June to September 2018. In 2019 she returned to Broadway as Lilli Vanessi / Katharine in Kiss Me, Kate . Production is directed by Scott Ellis and choreographed by Warren Carlyle . The revival is produced by the Roundabout Theater Company , which had produced a benefit concert of the show with O'Hara, Ellis and Carlyle back in 2016.
