Renée Fleming
Renée Fleming (born February 14, 1959 in Indiana , Pennsylvania ) is an American soprano and one of the world's leading opera singers .
Life
Renée Fleming, whose parents worked as a singing teacher, spent her childhood in Rochester , New York. She received her first vocal training at the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Potsdam (New York) . a. with the singing teacher Patricia Misslin . During her studies at SUNY, she sang with a jazz trio in a bar called Alger's. From 1983 to 1987 she continued her studies at the Eastman School of Music and at the renowned Juilliard School in New York City .
She made her debut in 1986 as Konstanze in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Salzburg State Theater . Renée Fleming's breakthrough came in 1988 as Countess in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Houston Grand Opera . In the first phase of her career she won important prizes: the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions, the Richard Tucker Award, the George London Prize, the Grand Prix at the International Singing Competition in Belgium and a Fulbright scholarship .
In the 1993/94 season she made her role debuts as Desdemona in Verdi's Otello and as Ellen Orford in Britten's Peter Grimes at the Metropolitan Opera . In the summer of 1994 she made her debut as Countess in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Glyndebourne Festival .
Fleming has appeared at the Vienna State Opera , the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the La Scala in Milan , the Opéra Bastille in Paris and the New York Metropolitan Opera . By 2008 alone she had sung 51 different roles.
The artist directory Musical America listed the soprano as Vocalist of the Year in 1997 , and in 1996 she received the Solti Prize of the French Académie du Disque Lyrique. Fleming received a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Vocal Performance category for the album The Beautiful Voice - Works of Charpentier, Gounod, Massenet & Flotow (1998) and for the album Bel canto - Bellini, Donizetti & Rossini (2002). In 2008 Fleming was awarded the Polar Music Prize .
In the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Renée Fleming took over some solo parts composed by Howard Shore , so u. a. the piece Twilight and Shadow .
In 2010 she received the Grammy Award for the best classical vocal performance, in 2012 the Echo Klassik in the category Singer of the Year with her album Ravel, Messiaen, Dutilleux: Poèmes published by Decca / Universal. In 2013 she was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In 2018 she sang Irish traditional Danny Boy at the Washington National Cathedral at the memorial service for John McCain .
Until 1998, Fleming was married to actor Rick Ross, with whom she has two daughters. She has been living in her second marriage to lawyer Tim Jessel since 2011.
