Howard Leslie Shore , [ˈhaʊˌəd ˈlɛzlɪ ˈʃɔə] ( BrE ) or [ˈhaʊərd ˈɫezɫɪ ˈʃɔr] ( AmE ), (born October 18, 1946 in Toronto , Ontario ) is an award-winning Canadian conductor and composer of film , chamber and concert music . The three-time Oscar winner is best known today for his music for the film trilogies The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit .

Life

Shore studied at the Berklee School of Music in Boston . Between 1969 and 1972 he made recordings with the group Lighthouse . Shore became known as the band's co-founder and musical director on the NBC show Saturday Night Live . From 1975 to 1980 he conducted the show's band.

Howard Shore has composed the score for a variety of feature films. His very different works include the settings of Das Schweigen der Lämmer , Philadelphia , Ed Wood , Sieben , Panic Room and The Aviator . The long-term collaboration with the Canadian director David Cronenberg , for whom he has underlayed numerous films with music , also plays an important role in his work . a. Die Fliege , Naked Lunch , Spider and A History of Violence .

His most famous work is the music for the Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson . According to Shore, he studied the opera Das Rheingold by Richard Wagner intensively for the leitmotif technique used in this piece . Shore arranged the compositions for the three films into a suite consisting of six movements for the concert hall.

In an interview with Emanuel Levy, he calls the almost four years that he has spent on The Lord of the Rings the most challenging and grateful task of his career and describes it as the summary of his artistic work.

In 2005 Howard Shore worked on the score for Peter Jackson's new film project, King Kong . Because of "different creative views", however, James Newton Howard was committed to Shore's place after a few weeks . However, Shore and Jackson have teamed up again for the filming of another Tolkien work and Shore composed the music for the trilogy The Hobbit , the first part of which was released in 2012.

In addition to his work as a film composer, Shore is also active in the field of chamber and concert music. The world premiere of his opera adaptation of the film Die Fliege (The Fly) took place on July 2, 2008 at the Théâtre du Châtelet . For the pianist Lang Lang he composed the piano concerto Ruin and Memory , which was premiered at the Beijing Music Festival 2010. He dedicated his cello concerto Mythic Gardens , which can be seen as a counterpart to it, to the cellist Sophie Shao , who premiered the piece on April 27, 2012 with the American Symphony Orchestra.

Howard Shore is the uncle of the Canadian composer Ryan Shore .

Shore received his first Oscar and a Grammy for the score for The Companions (The Lord of the Rings) . In 2004 a Grammy, two Golden Globes and two Oscars were added. In 2005 he received two Grammys again, this time for the score for the third part of the trilogy and the song Into the West ( Annie Lennox ). In 2005 Howard Shore received the Golden Globe Award for the soundtrack to the film Aviator and in 2010 the first-ever film music award of the Bavarian Radio. As part of the film music gala “Hollywood in Vienna” at the Wiener Konzerthaus , Shore received the “Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award” from City Councilor Andreas Mailath-Pokorny on September 16, 2010 from the City of Vienna .
