Mimzy - My friend from the future is an American science fiction - family film from the year 2007 . The literary film adaptation is loosely based on the short story Mimsy Were the Borogoves by Lewis Padgett, a shared pseudonym of Henry Kuttner and CL Moore . The film was shown for the first time in Germany on February 9, 2007 as part of the Berlinale .

action

In the future, humanity is on the verge of extinction. Fear and isolation have poisoned the human soul, so a genius scientist sees the only salvation in sending Mimzys back in time to find a pure human soul.

The siblings Noah and Emma Wilder find a box in the water on the beach at their summer home in Whitby. You will find a glowing crystal in it. They hide what they found from their mother and discover at night that there was more in the box: some stones that Emma can float and a cuddly toy bunny Emma calls Mimzy . Little by little, Noah and Emma become more and more intelligent and develop different skills such as super hearing, super vision, telepathy , telekinesis and teleportation . Noah's teacher Larry White discovers in class that the boy is scribbling mandalas , Buddhist symbols, in his pad. Noah also wins first prize with an unexpected research project, ultrasound manipulation of spiders as they weave their webs .

Parents are beginning to doubt how the average child could suddenly become such genius. Meanwhile, the two siblings are afraid that things will get out of control when Noah's crystal suddenly causes a nationwide power outage. As a result, Special Agent Nathaniel Broadman was hired by the FBI to investigate the incident on suspicion of terrorism.

When White and his girlfriend Naomi Schwartz appear at the Wilders' premises to convince them that their children are specially gifted children, the Wilders must find out for themselves that their children have supernatural abilities. Jo Wilder, the mother, then throws all the stones and the Mimzy into the garbage can. Noah saves everything and secretly gives Mimzy back to Emma so she can look into the future to see what will happen if she doesn't show up on time. The FBI storms her home, arrests and interrogates everyone to see if they pose a national threat. Emma shows her supernatural abilities with Mimzy's help, so that the FBI researchers take away her Mimzy and discover the highly developed Intel technology. With the help of telepathy via Emma, Mimzy tells that there is not much time left to save humanity in the future, because the individual utensils, including Mimzy, are already dissolving. But the FBI doesn't believe the Wilders, which is why they lock them up again.

So, using their skills and a pickup truck, Noah and Emma steal away to get to Whitby. There, they know, are the last stones that are needed for Mimzy's return journey into the future. With the help of the telepathically called White, they make it to their summer house in time and set up the device to send Mimzy back. Arriving in the future, the scientist can finally use the DNA of a pure human soul to save humanity.

criticism

“Exciting children's and family film as an emotional" ET "paraphrase, only that this time the good breaks out into one's own future because important values and feelings have been lost there. Somewhat diffuse and pathetic in its critical approaches, the film is nevertheless extremely entertaining and also conveys some thoughtful approaches. "

“The idea that children can save the future of mankind because they are not guilty yet could well have a story. And the two child actors Rhiannon Leigh Wryn and Chris O'Neil are amazingly good at this task. You get excited about them, feel Emma's love for Mimzy, follow Noah's flashes of inspiration. But the film wants too much at once. The director does not follow his narrative thread consistently, because the film is overloaded with individual stories and remains vague on important points. What a shame."

"Children's dreams are a valuable asset that needs to be protected - that's the message of this no-frills family film."

- Evening newspaper

“Quirky, sometimes inconclusive adaptation of Lewis Padgett's 1943 science fiction story, which New Line boss Robert Shaye lovingly staged. (...) On the negative side is the intrusive Intel Product Placement - but the kids shouldn't care a lot. "

- Focus: film

"When you are six years old, you can be amazed here, but when you are five by six years old, you sometimes just have to grin sourly."
