content

The Betrayal - Nerakhoon is about the family around the protagonist Thavi in exile in the USA and their past. Having fled the Lao Civil War , she now faces the challenges of the new everyday life in New York City .

The father was previously denounced by neighbors and declared an enemy of the state by the Pathet Lao. Nothing is known about his whereabouts - either he was sent to a labor camp or was sentenced to death .

Together with his mother, Thavi planned an escape to a better life via Thailand for the whole family, which actually consists of nine other children. The mother thought Thavis had the greatest chance of a successful escape. He was then the first of the family to flee at the age of 12 by crossing the Mekong River with two inflated plastic bags as a swimming aid. Mother and siblings followed two years later. The hopes of the new home ( "one step from heaven", a stage before the sky ) are disappointed a Accommodation is already upon arrival in a cheap apartment, along with other refugee families, but from Vietnam and Cambodia. The apartment is in a social hotspot, drugs and violence are commonplace in the area. Thavi becomes part of an Asian gang , which in turn answers the prevailing violence with violence. At the same time he tries to comfort the traumatized mother and to head the household.
