action
Texas in 1954. Nadine Hightower is about to divorce her husband Vernon, who is engaged to Renée Lomax. Nadine is pregnant.
Nadine wants to pick up her nude photos from a photographer, which should appear in Playboy . He is killed while she is in an adjoining room of the studio. She wants to take her photos with her, but she mistakenly takes the photos of the secret and valuable plans for a new motorway with her.
Nadine and Vernon have since been on the run from the police and from the gangsters led by Buford Pope who want the plans. Nadine and Vernon are brought to Pope, but are able to escape. They spend the night together in Vernon's trailer.
Vernon wants to buy the land along the route of the planned freeway, with his cousin, a lawyer, supposed to help. The lawyer teams up with Pope instead.
Lomax breaks up with Vernon when she finds Nadine's clothes in Vernon's trailer.
In a showdown at a scrap yard owned by Pope, Vernon overpowers one of Pope's helpers, who is shot by his boss. Vernon shoots another of his men.
