Rip Torn
Rip Torn (* 6. February 1931 in Temple , Texas as Elmore Rual Torn, Jr. ; † 9. July 2019 in Lakeville , Connecticut ) was an American film actor . In his acting career spanning more than 60 years, he played in around 190 film and television productions.
Life
Torn graduated from the University of Texas with an agricultural degree . In the mid-1950s he appeared in small television roles. He made his film debut in 1956 in Elia Kazan's Baby Doll - Don't Desire Another's Wife . He then took acting classes at the Actors Studio and dance classes with Martha Graham . Torn appeared on Broadway as Tom Finley Jr. in Sweet Bird of Youth and played the same role in the film adaptation of Richard Brooks from 1962. Among his most important character roles included the presentation of the Henry Miller in Joseph Strick Tropic of Cancer ( Tropic of Cancer , 1970) and his leading role as a worn out country singer in Daryl Duke's Payday ( Payday , 1973). Rip Torn was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Cross Creek (1983) . One of his most famous roles was Agent Z in Men in Black . In 1988 Rip Torn tried unsuccessfully as a director with the film The Telephone .
On January 29, 2010, Torn was arrested while attempting to break into a bank. For this he was sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment, which was suspended. During this time, Torn had to undergo irregular alcohol and drug tests.
Torn was married to actress Ann Wedgeworth (1934-2017) from 1956 until her divorce in 1961 and from 1963 until her death in 1987 with Geraldine Page . He had six children, a daughter from his first marriage, two sons and a daughter from his second marriage, and two daughters with Amy Wright , with whom he had been married since 1989. Torn was a cousin of Sissy Spacek .
