Turn the River (short title in the United States: TTR ) is an American film drama from the year 2007 . Directed by Chris Eigeman , who also wrote the script and co-produced the film.

action

The film is set in New York City and in a small town in the US state of New York . The divorced Kailey Sullivan ( Famke Janssen ) makes her living playing poker and billiards. She has to raise $ 50,000 to flee to Canada with her eleven-year-old son Gulley ( Jaymie Dornan ) with forged passports. Gully lives with his religiously fanatical stepmother Ellen ( Marin Hinkle ) and his alcoholic father David ( Matt Ross ), who is prone to aggressive outbursts, and who in turn is strongly influenced by his dominant mother Abby ( Lois Smith ). It was also she who got the divorce at the time and made sure that Gully grew up with his father, who cut off all contact with Kailey. What nobody in the family knows is that Gully and his mother are in regular correspondence and plan to escape together. In addition to the love for her son, one of the motives is that Gully is bullied at school and mistreated at home by his father. While Gully goes to school well and always invents new lies at home to cover up the secret meetings and messages to his mother, Kailey spends the nights in gambling halls to raise the necessary money. An exciting race against time begins. In the dramatic ending, Kailey handcuffs his father and takes her son away. At the showdown on the Canadian border, Kailey is gunned down by the American police. It remains to be seen whether she will survive or not.

Reviews

Ronnie Scheib wrote in Variety magazine on November 12, 2007 that Chris Eigeman's debut as a director and screenwriter was "very capable" . The “elegant” Famke Janssen is a “strange” choice for the lead role. The “atmospheric” film “vibrates in a positive way” from the authenticity and intensity of Janssen's portrayal. She plays a traditionally male role, which "subtly" changes the genre as well as her social gender ( "gender" ).

Chris Eigeman received an award for the screenplay at the 2007 Hamptons International Film Festival . Famke Janssen received two special awards from the festival.
