The television film Cowboy with 300 HP (original title: Steel Cowboy ) was first broadcast in Germany on June 10, 1980 on ZDF after it was first seen on US television on December 6, 1978.

The truck driver Clayton Davis has bought a new tractor unit and now runs his own haulage company with his partner KW Hicks. But the finance company is on his neck, the installment repayment is slow and also strains his marriage to Jesse. Because the financial agent passes on Clayton's financial situation, he is offered risky tours like with overloaded trailers , as he cannot afford to refuse tours while being on the "lazy list". Even the seedy Pinky Pincus becomes aware of him and can soon recruit Clayton for his purposes by paying him up to three times as much, but entangling Clayton in criminal business such as the transport of stolen cattle. Pincus even had Clayton carry out a fictitious theft of a trailer and then shoot his driver. KW gets out as Clayton's partner after the newspaper report about it and warns him to continue. Pincus then lets KW beat up at one of his parties, but the young waitress Johnnie, who came with the truck drivers, can contact Clayton in good time to come to KW's help. As KW one more time Pincus is true and it anraunzt to let Clayton from his clutches, Pincus leaves one night with the dangerous moving truck with KW and his new partner incendiary attack, where KW is killed.
At home with Jesse the bailiff is a guest and finally seizes the cow. With a heavy heart, Jesse decides to leave Clayton. When he comes home after a long time, he only finds messages from her.
After seeing the burned-out wreckage of KW's truck, Clayton calls Pincus that he has gone too far. Pincus suspects that Clayton is coming to him and sends him an armed man in his vintage car, who is pushed off the street by Clayton. Pincu's house also receives rams before Clayton breaks through the walls.
After spending time in prison, Clayton is approached by a young truck driver whom he offers to work with and which he happily accepts.
