Charles Harold Bernstein (born February 28, 1943 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American composer for film and television .

Bernstein was already conducting his own orchestral music at the age of 16. After studying composition at the Juilliard School , he moved to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he received various academic prizes and studied with Roy Harris .

Bernstein is now a member of the board of directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the Society of Composers and Lyricists, and ASCAP, as well as vice president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Foundation. He has also taught at the University of Southern California's Film Music Department and holds an annual film music seminar at the UCLA Extension.

In addition to his work as a film composer, Bernstein also writes books on music that have won the ASCAP Deems Taylor Special Recognition Award.

Bernstein composed over 100 film scores and is particularly known for his work in the genres of science fiction and horror . Including films like Entity - There is no escape from the invisible that haunts us (nominated for the Saturn Award for best music ), Cujo , Wes Craven's classic A Nightmare on Elm Street , The Horror Party and Love at First Bite . He also composed a lot for television. He won an Emmy for the episode Little Miss Perfect of the CBS Schoolbreak Special series . His music for Flames of Passion - A True Story and The Sea Wolf were nominated for an Emmy and The Man Who Broke 1000 Chains was nominated for a Cable ACE Award.

He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Georgianne Bernstein .
