From Coast to Coast (Original title: Coast to Coast ), also known as Wild Escape to California , is a 1980 American comedy film directed by Joseph Sargent . The screenplay was written by Stanley Weiser and starred Robert Blake and Dyan Cannon .

action

Dyan Cannon plays Madie Levrington, a woman who is wealthy but also neurotic. She lived in California with her husband Benjamin Levrington (Quinn Redeker) until he was admitted to a mental hospital in New York to keep them from going through an expensive divorce. She manages to escape from the asylum by telling her doctor Dr. Frederick Froll (Michael Lerner) takes hostage and later leaves him in the open. When it starts to rain, she finds shelter in a moving cattle truck.

The van is driven by Charles Callahan, played by Robert Blake. Before Callahan notices that she is on the way with him on his van, he hears about Madie Levrington's escape and a substantial reward for whoever brings her back over his CB radio . This gets his attention because he is so heavily in debt and can make the payments on his vehicle that his creditor threatens to steal his van from him.

Upon arrival at home, Callahan is met by his believer and his estranged wife, who forces him to flee with Madie. Madie insists that he take her back to California so she can confront her husband. So the two flee together through half of America.

Behind Madie's back, he meets with a group of people who want to bring her back. For this he receives a share of the reward money from the leader of the group, Sam Klinger (Maxine Stuart). However, he slowly falls in love with Madie while they are together on the van. He even teaches her to drive the van - but only because he was kicked in the crotch by a cop and was only able to drive in pain himself.

While camping in an open field in Texas, she finally finds the money he got for betraying her. She speaks to him about it and asks how he got the money. Reluctantly, he explains himself, but claims that he actually did not want the betrayal and the money. She doesn't believe him, so she grabs the van and drives off without him. Callahan finds an older man with a motorcycle who takes him away, and they chase Madie and the van. When they finally found it, he has to jump from the moving motorcycle onto the transporter that is also moving. This enables him to better understand the difficulties of their escape.

Madie drives the van back home to her husband, who is having a party in the backyard. He begs her to stop the vehicle and promises her that everything will be fine. However, she does not listen to this, continues into the party and knocks over everything that gets in her way. Finally, she even drives through the house until the van gets stuck. The cattle escape from the van and roam free around the ruined house and the remains of the party.

When she gets out, Benjamin tries to strangle Madie, but Callahan jumps out of the trailer and throws it to the ground. When the police arrive, they accuse Benjamin of being the driver of the van and she and Callaghan escape, but not without running into his creditor again, whereupon he simply leaves the van to him.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films describes From Coast to Coast as "a hectic slapstick film that, despite a few deeper moments, conjures up the usual romance of truck drivers and spreads more boredom than cheerfulness."

The American film critic Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of October 8, 1980 that the plot of the film was "predictable". It is also peppered with too many details. Ebert praised that with Dyan Cannon the film would be bearable.

Awards

Robert Blake was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the Worst Actor category in 1981. However, the award went to Neil Diamond for the film The Jazz Singer .
