content
The young Chasan Yussel is striving for a career in the music business against the wishes of his devout father and wife. He travels to California under the name Jess Robin and meets the manager Molly Bell, a woman who shares his dream with him. Desperate about his new fame and the reaction of his father, who pronounces him dead, Jess runs away and wanders through America for a while undetected.
reception
The film was received with mixed feelings by audiences and critics. For one, Neil Diamond got the Golden Raspberry , but he was also nominated for the Golden Globe . The soundtrack produced one of the most commercially successful songs - the US patriotic "America", which is still one of the obligatory "July 4th tunes" today. With "Love On The Rocks" another song from the successful soundtrack made it to number two on the charts.
The lexicon of international films writes as a short review: "The plot serves largely only as a pretext for the musical self-portrayal of the star Neil Diamond and at best provides simplistic political models."
In Germany, the soundtrack was number 40 on the album charts.
