Trial and Error ( Trial and Error ) is an American film comedy by Jonathan Lynn from the year 1997 .

Charles Tuttle is a successful Los Angeles attorney who was recently promoted to his firm's new partner. He is also engaged to his boss's daughter and plans to marry her in the near future. Tuttle is said to represent Benjamin Gibbs, who is related to his boss's wife, in court in a small town. He has to answer 65 cases there for shipping fraud.
Tuttle and his best friend, the unsuccessful actor Richard Rietti, drink too much alcohol the night before the trial and then get into a brawl. As a result, Tuttle takes too much painkillers and is completely deranged on court day. To prevent a debacle, Rietti pretends to be Tuttle in court, but cannot get an adjournment. Since the two friends have now made themselves liable to prosecution, the deception must be continued. Tuttle poses as Richard Rietti and attends the trial as a defense assistant. Since, for understandable reasons, he cannot present a license, he is not allowed to actively intervene in the questioning of witnesses and experts, he is only directing his friend in secret. This also turns out to be urgently needed, because Rietti is initially completely overwhelmed with the tasks of a defense lawyer.
While Tuttle flirts with bartender Billie Tyler, Rietti has her eye on the ambitious prosecutor Elizabeth Gardner. After a long and sometimes turbulent negotiation, Rietti manages to achieve success. But Gibbs refuses the mild sentence offered for an admission of guilt and puts everything on an acquittal. However, the jury found him guilty. After the trial, both Tuttle and Rietti confess the truth to their ladies of the heart. Tuttle also breaks off his engagement and plans a new, more casual life with Billie. Rietti and Gardner also become a couple.

James Berardinelli compared the film on ReelViews to the comedy My Cousin Winnie . The script is not a “masterpiece”, but the director makes the best of it. The film was tailored to Michael Richards; Berardinelli criticized its structure. The critic praised the portrayal of Charlize Theron, the "sexy" and "sweet" look.
Roger Ebert praised the scene in the Chicago Sun-Times of May 30, 1997 in which Billie Tyler learns that Charles Tuttle is in a relationship. She shows understanding, leaves the room and cries for what seems “true”. Ebert wrote that in a "routine" film the woman would "explode". Some scenes are "very funny" because they reflect the nature of the characters. The serious consideration of the characters is reminiscent of the works of Billy Wilder . Ebert praised the portrayal of the “invaluable” Jeff Daniels and that of Michael Richards.
Edward Guthmann described the film in the May 30, 1997 San Francisco Chronicle as a "disappointment". He offered Michael Richards the opportunity to demonstrate his "comic talent" more extensively than in a sitcom, but Richards did not develop any other style than in the sitcom Seinfeld . The director could not maintain the right "rhythm" of the gags.
