Michael Anthony Richards (born July 24, 1949 in Culver City , California ) is an American actor and former stand-up comedian .

Career

In 1989 he played the role of Stanley Spadowski , a clumsy cleaning man who saves a small TV station with his clown show in the children's program in Weird Al Yankovic 's first feature film UHF - Sender with limited hope . From 1989 on, he took on the role of Cosmo Kramer in Seinfeld , one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, an eccentric and bon vivant who stood out due to his style of clothing. For this he received an Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy series in 1993, 1994 and 1997, as well as three Screen Actors Guild Awards in various categories in 1995, 1997 and 1998 .

During an appearance as a stand-up comedian at the Laugh Factory comedy club in West Hollywood in November 2006, Richards cursed a heckler during a long outburst as a " nigger " during an appearance . A spectator filmed the situation. Richards later apologized on the Late Show with David Letterman and retired as a comedian.

Since that scandal, Richards has hardly received any role offers until today. His first major project since then is a lead role on the sitcom Kirstie with Kirstie Alley . The series aired on TV Land from December 4, 2013 through February 26, 2014 . After a season of 12 episodes, the series was canceled.

Richards was married to Cathleen Lyons from 1974 to 1992, with whom he has a daughter. He has been in a relationship with Beth Skipp since 2002, whom he married in 2010 and with whom he has a son.
