A forged brand , also known as forging punches or forging logo, is a from the blacksmith in the finished workpiece which is introduced symbol .

A blacksmith who had made an object "signed" his work by striking an individual mark, which represented his mark, his initials , etc. With the impact of this mark, he stood up for it with his name and reputation and guaranteed that the workpiece he stamped also met the general requirements for it.

Blacksmiths' marks can usually be found on all kinds of edged weapons from the past epochs and even now in modern times some sword and cutlery smiths have rediscovered the blacksmiths brand and stamp their blades according to old models. But there are also tools with forging brands, e.g. B. high quality sickles and hatchets.

The blacksmith's mark is a stamp made of steel , which is the mirror image of the blacksmith's logo. It is usually hammered into the glowing object at the end of the forging process or into the cooled workpiece after machining has been completed. In modern times, the forging mark is also often etched in electrically using a template and liquid electrolyte .
