Gwen Verdon
Gwyneth Evelyn "Gwen" Verdon (born January 13, 1925 in Culver City , California - † October 18, 2000 in Woodstock , Vermont ) was an American actress and dancer .
Life
Gwen Verdon's mother was a well-known dancer during her lifetime; her father worked as an electrician at MGM studios. Despite an early childhood disability - Gwen Verdon suffered from a misalignment of the legs - she was on stage for the first time at the age of six.
Gwen was a celebrated Broadway star , having performed in the musicals Damn Yankees , Chicago and Sweet Charity , among others . Only occasionally did she appear in Hollywood films, for example in the film adaptation of Damn Yankees of the same name , which is why she never became as big a star in Hollywood as she was on Broadway. In one of her last films, she played the quirky aunt Ruth of her two nieces Lee Lacker (played by Meryl Streep ) and Bessie (played by Diane Keaton ) in Marvin's Daughters (1996 ).
Verdon was married to reporter James Henaghan from 1942 to 1947, the couple had one son. In 1960 she married the choreographer Bob Fosse , with whom she had a daughter. Fosse and Verdon's relationship ended in the early 1970s, but they remained married until his death in 1987 and were artistically and friendly.
On October 18, 2000, she died of a heart attack . In her honor, all the lights on Broadway were dimmed for a minute.
In 2019, the US miniseries Fosse / Verdon was released, in which Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams played the title roles.
