Andreas Mailath-Pokorny (born November 15, 1959 in Vienna ) is rector , president of the BSA and former city councilor in Vienna.

Since September 1, 2018 he has been the rector of the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna (MUK). From 2001 to May 24, 2018 he was the city councilor for culture, science and sport in Vienna .

education

After graduating from the Academic Gymnasium Vienna , he studied law and political science at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1983 . This was followed by post-graduate studies at the Bologna Center of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Italy, from which he graduated in 1985 with a diploma in international relations .

Professional background

In 1986 he joined the diplomatic service through the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs , worked in the international law office and was a member of the CSCE delegation. From 1988 to 1996 he worked in the cabinet of Federal Chancellor Franz Vranitzky , most recently in the position of office manager. From 1996 to 2001 he headed the Art Affairs Section in the Federal Chancellery .

From 2001 he was a member of the Viennese provincial government, initially responsible for culture and science, and from 2015 also for sport, media, ICT and the electoral authority. He has been a member of the SPÖ since 1986, was Deputy Chairman of the SPÖ Landstrasse from 2001 to 2018 and has been President of the BSA and member of the SPÖ's extended federal party executive since 2010.

The major projects of his tenure include the redesign of the Vienna Museum, the reorganization of the Vienna music theater landscape (including the establishment of the Theater an der Wien as the first municipal opera house), the Vienna theater reform (with the establishment of numerous new stages, including Rabenhof, Nestroy-Hof, Werk X, Dschungel Wien, TAG, brut), as well as the founding of new festivals (Popfest, original sounds). The city and state archives in the Gasometer and Vienna Library, but also the Roman Museum and the depot of the Vienna Museum have been redesigned as “the city's memory”. With the Kunsthalle, Kunsthaus and Musa new exhibition spaces in Vienna were established, the Karlsplatz Art Square and Art in Public Space (KöR) were new initiatives. The Vienna Film Commission was founded and the municipalization of numerous Viennese cinemas (horticulture, metro) saved them from being blocked. Free admission for young people to museums, the Vienna Culture Pass, Cash for Culture, Go for Culture, Kulturlotsinnen and Shift were new participatory cultural initiatives. The introduction of a “Festival of Joy” on May 8th, a science ball, the restitution of over 30,000 art objects, numerous memorials and memorials (deserters memorial, Spiegelgrund, Aspang train station, February memorial), and additional panels contributed to a “conscious culture of remembrance” Street signs, the renaming of the Lueger-Ring and the renovation of Jewish cemeteries, as well as the introduction of the Vienna History Wiki.

BSA - Association of Social Democratic Academics, Intellectuals and Artists

Since the end of 2010, Andreas Mailath-Pokorny has also been President of the Association of Social Democratic Academics, Intellectuals and Artists (BSA).

This upstream organization of the SPÖ with almost 9,000 members is run as a discussion platform, programmatic think tank and professional network (numerous mentoring programs) also with a foreign policy academy.

Rector of the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna

In April 2018 Mailath-Pokorny announced that he would no longer be a member of the city council under the mayor-designate Michael Ludwig from May 24, 2018. He is planning a professional reorientation. Veronica Kaup-Hasler succeeded him as City Councilor for Culture .

In June 2018 it was announced that he would succeed Franz Patay as Rector of the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna (MUK) in September 2018 . The NEOS polemicized that Patay, who had already taken over the management of the United Theaters in autumn 2016 , has since been "kept warm" for a politically acceptable person. In a first attempt at occupation in January 2017, City School Council President Susanne Brandsteidl was rumored to be the first in the row and allegedly stopped because of internal SPÖ disputes. As the rector of the MUK, Mailath-Pokorny has set himself the goal of strengthening the external perception of the university after its renaming from the conservatory and of further networking through cooperation.

As rector, Mailath-Pokorny opened the MUK (among other things by establishing the social project full board as a new cafeteria), established new courses and focuses (instrumental and vocal pedagogy, Viennese music), and entered into new collaborations (inter-university research project Elfriede Jelinek, collaborations with universities in China, Russia) and has reorganized quality management, research and teaching (appointment of Rosemarie Brucher as the new Pro-Rector for Science and Research).
