action

Agatha Weiss travels from Florida to Los Angeles to meet her family, whom she deported to a psychiatric hospital seven years ago after trying to kill her younger brother Benjie and herself in a fire. Benjie survived the incident without any externally visible injuries, while Agatha has been disfigured since then. Benjie has now risen to become a sought-after child star who, at just 13 years old, can look back on extensive experience with addictive substances .

Agatha uses her Twitter contacts to Carrie Fisher , who recommends her as personal assistant to the formerly acclaimed film actress Havana Segrand. There she meets the author and unemployed actor Jerome Fontana, who works as a driver for a limousine service , and begins an affair with him.

Havana feels haunted by the ghost of her late mother, by whom she was sexually abused , which is why she regularly reports to well-known TV psychologist Dr. Seeks out Stafford Weiss, who uses questionable methods to take care of his prominent and wealthy clientele. Their advanced age and slowly dwindling attractiveness are also a problem. The main role in the planned remake of the classic film Stolen Water , which made her mother famous more than 50 years ago, is intended to help her overcome her mother complex . The role initially goes to a competitor, but then falls to Havana due to an accident with a tragic outcome.

Child star Benjie is also haunted by ghosts due to the traumatic childhood experiences and almost strangles his co-star in affect, who threatens to steal the show from him, which ends his career. Meanwhile, Agatha had to watch Havana doing it with Jerome in his limousine. Then there is a dispute between Agatha and Havana, as a result of which Agatha is fired and Agatha kills Havana. When her brother visits her, they decide to commit suicide together by giving each other an overdose of pills.

criticism

In the Berliner Tagesspiegel the performances of the actors, especially those of Julianne Moore, were praised, who managed to breathe life into the "one-dimensional characters". At the same time, however, the “tight corset” of the “clichéd showbiz satire” was criticized. Der Spiegel, on the other hand, praised the film insofar as "Cronenberg created a new variant of Hollywood dysfunction".
