history

Arcade Fire at a concert in New York City 2007

Win Butler moved from Texas via New York to Montreal in 2000 , where he was looking for musicians for his band Régine Chassagne, whose family had fled their home in Haiti before the Duvalier regime to Montreal and who were in their childhood and youth learned a variety of musical instruments.

Little by little Butler gathered the other current members of the band around him, and in 2003 Arcade Fire released their EP of the same name. The name Arcade Fire is said to come from a childhood memory of Win Butler. A classmate reportedly scared him with a story about a terrible fire in a video arcade. Will Butler, the underage brother of Win Butler at the time of the EP recording, followed his brother to Canada, but was later forced to return to the USA to attend school, so that he could not be there when the recordings for Funeral and was represented by Howard Bilerman.

The first album from Arcade Fire, Funeral (Engl. For funeral ), was released in September 2004. The band members have given the title of the already finished album because shortly several of their family members had died. So the name is not directly related to the music on the album. Still, family is a central theme of the songs on the album. In the song Haïti, for example, Régine Chassagne deals with her homeland, from which her family had to flee shortly after her birth. Funeral was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize in 2005 and was nominated for a Grammy Award for the best alternative album in 2006.

The successor to Funeral is called Neon Bible , was released on March 2, 2007 in Germany on the City Slang label and entered the top 20 of the German album charts . At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, Neon Bible was nominated in the category Best Alternative Music Album , but could not prevail against the album Icky Thump of the White Stripes .

In the spring of 2010, Arcade Fire announced that they would release a new album called The Suburbs . It was released on August 2nd in the UK and August 3rd in the US. In Germany, the album was released exclusively on July 30th on the City Slang label . Arcade Fire's concept album The Suburbs is thematically devoted to life in the suburbs. Win Butler, who grew up in Woodlands - a suburb of Houston - was inspired by the picture of an old friend from his suburban home to the song of the same name, The Suburbs , which ultimately became an entire album with the same title. The Suburbs , however, is less a journey into the singer's youth than an attempt to fathom a youthful soul that tells of the loss of innocence and the struggle for sincerity. The album won a Grammy in 2011 for Best Album of the Year and the BRIT Award for Best International Album.

Arcade Fire composed the song Abraham's Daughter for the soundtrack to the film The Hunger Games , released in 2012 . The band also composed the fictional national anthem of Panem (Horn of Plenty) .

In August 2013, the band released the single Reflektor ; The accompanying music video was directed by Anton Corbijn , and David Bowie made a guest appearance in the chorus . In October 2013, the same name, the fourth album was released reflector . As a viral promotion, Arcade Fire played a few club concerts in selected cities around the world immediately after the release under the name The Reflektors . The tour dates for 2014 were released on December 11th. A total of 59 concerts were announced, including two headliner shows in Germany. The production of Reflektor was captured in the film The Reflektor Tapes . This was shown in selected cinemas in September 2015.

On July 5, 2016, the band played their first concert in two years in a club in Barcelona. It served to prepare for her festival tour, which took her to Spain, Portugal, the USA and Canada.

On January 19, 2017, the band released the single I Give You Power on Tidal , together with soul singer Mavis Staples . Shortly afterwards, the title was available from all major music portals.

On June 1, Arcade Fire released the single Everything Now and announced the album of the same name, produced by the band, Thomas Bangalter ( Daft Punk ) and Steve Mackey ( Pulp ), which was released on July 28 on Columbia Records . In addition, the band went on tour in Europe and North America in summer and autumn.

style

The basic style of the band is characterized by elements from indie rock , art rock and folk ; nevertheless, in individual songs, even for these genres, instruments such as church organ , accordion or wind instruments are in the foreground. The “slightly hysterical and heartbreaking vocals of Win Butlers ” ( laut.de ) are often supplemented by background choirs or the voice of Régine Chassagne. Most of the songs on Arcade Fire are sung in English, but there are also some French sung passages, such as Une Année Sans Lumière from the debut album Funeral or Black Mirror from Neon Bible .

activism

Haiti

As Régine Chassagne is of Haitian descent, Arcade Fire works continuously to support the people of Haiti by raising awareness of the fighting in that country and history, especially the regime of François Duvalier , in which 30,000 to 60,000 Haitians were murdered, sharpens. This special time in Haiti is highlighted in Arcade Fire's song "Haiti". Chassagne co-founded Kanpe (Creole for "stand up"), a foundation that brings "Haitians, members of the diaspora, friends of Haiti and local partners together to develop bespoke solutions to help these families escape the cycle of poverty and on." Stand on your own two feet. "
