Staples is a daughter of Pops Staples , with whom she first appeared in the gospel genre since 1951 . She celebrated her first success as a member of the gospel singing group The Staple Singers , which was involved in the civil rights movement and continues to exist today. In 1969 she started her solo career, during which she worked with Prince , among others . Staples has appeared in films such as The Last Waltz , Wattstax , New York Undercover, and on the Cosby Show .
In 2008 Rolling Stone listed her as 56th of the 100 best singers of all time .
