Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American blues and soul singer and Grammy award winner.

Live and act

Staples is a daughter of Pops Staples , with whom she first appeared in the gospel genre since 1951 . She celebrated her first success as a member of the gospel singing group The Staple Singers , which was involved in the civil rights movement and continues to exist today. In 1969 she started her solo career, during which she worked with Prince , among others . The Mavis Staples album Live: Hope at the Hideout , which was produced at the Chicago club The Hideout , was nominated for the Grammy Awards 2010 in the category Best Contemporary Blues Album.

On the occasion of the Grammy Awards 2020 a tribute concert for Prince took place on January 28, 2020 in the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles under the motto "Let's Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince", at which Mavis Staples, among others, Maya Rudolph and The Revolution performed. The concert aired on U.S. television on April 21, 2020, the fourth anniversary of Prince's death.

Staples has appeared in films such as The Last Waltz , Wattstax , New York Undercover, and on the Cosby Show .
