Hozier
Hozier , actually Andrew Hozier-Byrne (born March 17, 1990 in Bray ), is an Irish folk rock musician .
biography
Andrew Hozier-Byrne grew up playing music as the son of a blues musician and joined his first band when he was 15. After school he took up music studies at Trinity College Dublin and was a member of the university orchestra. A little later he broke off his studies to record his own demos. For three years he was a member of the internationally known classical choir Anúna , whose repertoire ranges from baroque music to traditional Irish folk music to crossover pop .
In 2012 Hozier began a solo career and released his debut single Take Me to Church a year later . The song reached number 2 on the Irish singles chart ; It also got a lot of attention on the Internet, also because of the video for the song, which cinematically stages homophobia . Director Brendan Canty took up Hozier's ideas to address misanthropy towards homosexuals and other people who do not conform to heteronormativity , especially with a view to current developments in Russia . In interviews with the Irish Times , Hozier pointed out that the song itself does not refer specifically to homosexual love, but more generally to (sensual and sexual) love and the transformation of the self in a relationship.
While he released two more singles in Ireland with From Eden and Sedated in spring and summer 2014 respectively, both of which came into the top 3 of the charts, the international release of Take Me to Church was being prepared. In the USA, the EP and later the song was able to place in the respective charts and in Germany and many other European countries it also made it into the top 5. In Austria, Switzerland, Flanders and Sweden it reached number one. The self-named debut album Hozier was released in Ireland on September 19, 2014. In the same year he received the European Border Breakers Award .
