Edwin Farnham "Win" Butler III (born April 14, 1980 in Truckee , California , United States ) is a singer , guitarist , pianist , bassist and songwriter for the Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire .

Life

Butler was born in Truckee , California , United States and grew up in The Woodlands , Texas . He is the grandson of jazz - guitarist Alvino Rey . His mother and grandmother were also in the music business.

From the age of 15 he went to the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire , where he played in several school bands. He later studied photography at Sarah Lawrence College in New York . However, he broke off his studies after a year. He then attended McGill University in Montreal , where he graduated in theology . He also met his future wife and bandmate Régine Chassagne, whom he married in 2003.

On April 2nd, 2011, LCD Soundsystem played their last concert, which was recorded on DVD. Arcade Fire were guests at the concert. During a speech between two songs by James Murphy , Win Butler shouted "Shut up and play the hits!" This interjection was used as the title of the concert documentation .

Butler's first child, a son, was born on April 21, 2013.

Guitars

Butler plays Fender Jaguar , Fender Telecaster Custom, as well as guitars from Mosrite and CF Martin & Co.
