Playwrights Horizons is a non-profit organization with its own theater building on Off-Broadway in New York City . It was established to support contemporary American playwrights, poets, and stage song composers, as well as stage actors. The organization promotes the training of authors and the performance of their plays. The name is often associated with satires on New York city life.

New plays by renowned authors are staged under the artistic direction of Tim Sanford to foster a new generation of theater actors. The young authors are supported in every phase of their training through the following development programs: Review of theater manuscripts and scores , commissions, readings, musical workshops, studio and main stage productions.

Playwrights Horizons was founded in 1971 at Clark Center Y by Bob Moss. André Bishop worked as a theater director from 1981 to 1991 and was replaced by the television actor and producer Don Scardino, who stayed until 1995. In connection with the redevelopment of the New York theater district, the organization was able to move to 42nd Street (416 West, between 9th and 10th Av.) In 2002 and now also has its own theater building. The house was formerly used for burlesque .

Playwrights Horizons operates an acting school called Playwrights Horizons Theater School , which is part of the Tisch School of the Arts . The organization also includes a theater ticket sales point ( Ticket Central ), the proceeds of which are used to support the off-Broadway actor community.

To date, Playwrights Horizons has worked with over 350 authors and has received a number of awards and honors. In 2005, Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave the organization a portion of the $ 20 million Carnegie Corporation grant .
