In Trousers, directed by William Finn, premiered twice. 1979 on February 21st on Off-Broadway Playwrights Horizons for 24 performances and again on December 8th for eight performances. Chip Zien, Alison Fraser, Joanna Green and Mary Testa were in the cast.
On March 26, 1985, a significantly rewritten version with additional songs, a more cohesive storyline, and more clearly contoured characters was performed at the Promenade Theater , where it was played 16 times. The production was directed by Matt Casella, starring Stephen Bogardus, Catherine Cox, Sherry Hursey and Kathy Garrick.
The one-act play focuses on Marvin, who has a (nameless) wife and a son. He quits his previous relationships including his school sweetheart, Miss Goldberg, his English teacher who lets him play Christopher Columbus in a school play, and then reveals that he is gay . Torn by his natural inclination and his desire not to destroy his family life as he knows it, he ultimately makes the decision that what he feels is best for him.
