Upgrading is a follow-up process in food processing.

After the preparation of food, the loss of essential components should be replaced during this process. The upgrade serves as a way to improve the nutritional balance of the entire meal . This is done in particular for the ingredients protein , trace elements and vitamins .

Typical materials used for upgrading are fresh herbs and fruits , with which dishes are garnished shortly before serving . The addition of milk and dairy products such as cream and cheese is also common. After upgrading the food, there is basically no further cooking, so that it is consumed immediately afterwards.

In nutritional science , the addition of fruit juices , fresh fruit , milk desserts and salads to meals is called upgrading.
