Craig Lucas

Craig Lucas (born April 30, 1951 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American dramaturge , screenwriter and film director . He also directed feature films, including Birds of America .

life and career

Craig Lucas was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1951. He was adopted by a Pennsylvania couple at the age of eight months after his birth parents gave him away on the day he was born. The poet Anne Sexton became his mentor when he studied theater at Boston University and graduated there in 1973. Lucas went to New York and first worked as an actor on Broadway in plays such as Shenandoah Rex , On the Twentieth Century and Sweeney Todd , before Stephen Sondheim encouraged him to write his own plays.

In the 1980s, Lucas began writing screenplays in addition to his plays. In 1988, the play Prelude to a Kiss was created , which was nominated for several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in the category of best drama. In 1992 the play was also made into a film by the director friend Norman René with Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan in the leading roles. Craig Lucas also wrote the screenplay for the film Magical Times .

In 2005, he directed the drama The Dying Gaul with Patricia Clarkson , Campbell Scott and Peter Sarsgaard in the lead roles. In 2008 he directed the movie production Birds of America . It played Matthew Perry , Ben Foster and Ginnifer Goodwin .

In 2012 he received the Joseph Jefferson Award for the best musical production The Light in the Piazza at Theo Ubique Cabaret Theater Company in Chicago, Illinois .
