Barbara Cook (born October 25, 1927 in Atlanta - † August 8, 2017 in New York City ) was an American singer and actress .

Life

After starting out as a singer in New York nightclubs, Cook made her Broadway debut in the musical Flahooley in 1951 . This was followed by roles in the world premieres of Plain and Fancy , Candide (1956) and The Music Man (1957). She received a Tony Award for her performance in The Music Man . With her soprano voice she often embodied the role of the young naive on Broadway. Cook performed in musicals and in Michael's Pub until the mid-1970s . After that she was mainly heard as a concert singer in her own personality shows. She also recorded numerous records. It was not until she was over 80 that she said goodbye to the stage.

Cook also appeared as an actress in a number of television series and voiced the mother's character in the cartoon Thumble Line , but she had far greater success with musicals. In 2011 she was honored with the Kennedy Center Honors for her life's work .

From her only marriage to actor David LeGrant, which divorced in 1965, she had a son. Barbara Cook died at her Manhattan home on August 8, 2017, at the age of 89 .
