Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga (born February 22, 1971 in Manila ) is a Filipino singer , actress and musical artist .

Life

Lea Salonga spent the first six years of her life in Angeles City and then moved to Manila with her parents . She is the older sister of the composer Gerard Salonga . Lea Salonga began her career as a child star in the Philippines and made her debut as a singer in 1978. Her first album, Small Voice , was released in 1981 and went platinum in the Philippines . In 1988 she took part in the audition for the musical Miss Saigon in New York and received the female lead for the premiere in 1989 in London . In 1990 she received the Laurence Olivier Award for best actress in a musical for portraying Kim . In 1991 she played Kim at the Broadway premiere and received the Tony Award as a result . Between 1989 and 2001 she played Kim regularly in London, New York and also in her homeland in Manila.

In 1992 she took over the singing part of Princess Jasmine for the Disney cartoon production Aladdin . At the 1993 Academy Awards , the film won an Academy Award for Best Song and Lea Salonga sang at the awards ceremony. In 1993 she took on the role of Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway .

In 2001 she played the role of Lien Hughes in the television series Young and Passionate - How Life Plays as the successor to Ming-Na Wen . In 2002 Lea Salonga returned for a premiere on Broadway and starred in the musical Flower Drum Song by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein . In addition to her singing and acting activities, Lea Salonga has been writing columns for the Philippine newspaper Philippine Daily Inquirer since 2008 . For the title A Whole New World from the film Aladdin , sung by her and Brad Caleb Kane , she received a platinum record in the USA and a silver record in Great Britain.

Lea Salonga married the Sino-Japanese manager Robert Charles Chien in Los Angeles in 2004 and has had a daughter since 2006.
