Hittbergen is a municipality in the district of Lüneburg in Lower Saxony .
geography
Geographical location
Hittbergen is located west of the Elbufer-Drawehn nature park in an Elbe marshland. The community belongs to the joint community of Scharnebeck , which has its administrative seat in the community of Scharnebeck .
Hittbergen with Barförde is characterized by farms (893 inhabitants). Landmarks of this picturesque community are the church with the thousand-year-old oak standing in front of it and the mill.
The municipality of Hittbergen and its districts are located in a typical Elbe marshland landscape (in the eastern part also marshland landscape), which is characterized by many watercourses, smaller ditches and larger outflows such as the Marschwetter and of course the Elbe itself.
Another landmark of Hittbergen is visible from afar; the 1961 decommissioned windmill, a gallery Dutchman. The wing cross, cap and compass rose are still preserved. The mill now serves as a residential mill. In 1998/99 extensive restoration work was carried out on the mill cap, compass roses and wings.
Hittbergen lies on a mountain of sand. Since the sand heats up in the sun, the name Hittbergen (Platt: hot mountains) could have come about.
Parts of the place are at the height of the old dike crown.
Incorporations
On March 1, 1974, the neighboring municipality of Barförde was incorporated.
Origin of the place name
Old names of the place are 1211 in uilla hethberge, 1216 in hethberge, 1264 in hetberge, 1275 iuxta Hetberge, 1302 in hidbergen, 1304 in Hethberghe and around 1306 in Hetberge ... Ludolfo de Hetberge. The historical evidence of the name reveals that the name originally was not Hit (t) bergen, but probably Hetberg. First of all, it should be noted about the name that a mountain in the north German lowlands can also be five to ten meters high, in order to be called that, because the place name undoubtedly contains the component "-berg" as a singular (in hethberge, in hetberge ). Forms with an ending -n did not appear until the beginning of the 15th century. The first word component is more difficult to explain. This is probably where the basic meaning “curved, inclined, hollowed out” lies. Hittbergen could therefore mean "place of incline".
