About this picture

Mechtersen ( Plattdüütsch : Mechtsen ) is a Lower Saxon town on the Samtgemeinde Bardowick in the district of Lueneburg . According to the Mechtersen song , the place is "only a quarter of an hour" away from Lüneburg and Vögelsen . geography

Geographical location

Mechtersen's farmers started cutting plagues early on in the north of the municipality and in the neighboring municipality of Radbruch . In addition, there is a marl cave in the south , which the Mechtersers used until the 20th century. Marl was used to improve acidic soil.

Mechtersen is still dominated by agriculture today. Many townspeople come to Mechtersen because of its rural idyll. So it has become a riding place to this day. Due to its location in the glacial valley of the Elbe , it is on the border between Marsch and Geest , which can be seen from the field names around Mechtersen. The community is located in the north of the Lüneburg Heath . In the south of the village there is an area where you can still find them.

Examples of field names are:

  • On the sea and Bruchweg
  • Thachtmisser Berg and Im Brink
  • Heidkamp

Neighboring communities

history

The Winsen (Luhe) office around 1600

The first documentary mention is on May 21, 1158. This is where Bishop Hermann von Verden decided on the Decima in Mechtersen . Two thirds of it went to the canons and one third to the provost in Bardowick . When Johann and Lambert von Mechtersen died in 1300, they left their goods to the Bardowick monastery . Above all, this and the von Meding family were landlords of the Mechterser Höfe until 1844 . The Bardowick Bailiwick was first mentioned in 1430 . Mechtersen belonged to this - as well as Handorf , Vögelsen and Wittorf in the so-called Sunderghude (special estate ), which was administered by the Radbrucher Meyerhof - early on. In the middle of the 18th century, the Winsen (Luhe) office received jurisdiction over Mechtersen from the Schnellenberg patrimonial court . In 1852 Mechtersen went to the Lüne office and in 1885 to the newly founded district of Lüneburg. In 1969, Mechtersen merged with Bardowick and Vögelsen to form the Bardowick municipality within the district.

In 1780 a local school was named for the first time with teacher Frantz Martin Röder, which only lost its independence in 1971.

When Napoleon's troops moved through the area at the beginning of the 19th century, they made an important connection route impassable for the Mechtersen. After the Mechterser and Vögelser were finally referred to as " troublemakers" after a few letters of complaint to the Landdrostei , the path was finally renewed at the expense of the state.

Pentecost tree plants

Garland with foliage crown over the town entrance

At Whitsun there is an old tradition in Mechtersen: planting the whit tree . Just like the Easter fire, it is carried out by the village youth:

On the Friday before Pentecost, the village youth collects oak leaves and ties them into a garland. In this they hang a crown of leaves, to which an empty grain bottle is tied. At the same time, the Pfingt trees (young birches) are felled.

On Saturday morning, the garland will be hung between two birches above the entrance to the town. According to this, everyone who wants to pass the garland has to pay a fee to the organizers. In the afternoon, the Pentecost trees are distributed to the villagers (one at each house). For this, the village youth gets some money or something (alcoholic) to drink. When distributing the village youth calls out the Low German text: “De Pingstbööm de wast” (High German: “The Pentecostal trees that grow”).

After a week, the garland is removed again and the trees can be removed from the houses again.
