history

Local development

The area of the villages of the municipality of Betzendorf has been settled at the latest since the Neolithic Age. Numerous finds from this period can be found in the collection of the Lüneburg Museum, some stone axes from that era are in local private ownership.

Only the neighboring town of Tellmer can be dated to the time before the year 1000 (988).

The church patronage belonging to the Adelshof Barkhof was originally held by the von Oedeme family; Their possessions were mostly bought up by the Ebstorf monastery between 1368 and 1378, and later the grotes in Betzendorf were wealthy. The possession of the Diocese of Verden can still be proven in 1252 in all places of today's municipality of Betzendorf.

The fortified round tower of the Betzendorfer Church, which is exactly opposite the Adelshof, speaks for the former presence of a fortification in the village. Obviously, the Betzendorfer Barkhof - as well as the neighboring Hillersbüttel, which no longer exists today - fell victim to one of the numerous late medieval feuds between the state rulers and the up-and-coming city of Lüneburg.

On March 1, 1974, the communities Drögennindorf, Glüsingen and Tellmer were incorporated.

Oldest farmhouse

Commercial gable of the farmhouse

On the property Glüsingen 4 (Lichtheideheim) stands the oldest farmhouse in the Lüneburg district and the Lüneburg Heath , built around 1540, with an old half-timbered house . The commercial gable and the chamber compartment (at the opposite end) were added in 1648. The research and documentation was carried out by the structure researcher Dr. Klages. Due to upcoming renovation work, a tour of the interior is currently (2017) not possible. The house and a neighboring coach house belonged to the Lichtschulheim Lüneburger Land .

Light school home Lüneburg country

In 1927 the Lüneburger Land light school in Glüsingen was founded as a high school for boys and girls by the teacher and supporter of nudism Dr. Martin Fränzel founded. Its specialty was the integration of nudism into the pedagogical concept. A vegetarian vacation home was operated next to the school to be built. The goals of the light school home included:

  • Constant stay in the health-promoting forest and meadow air, which was relaxing for big city children and is to be considered together with the goals of the rural education center movement .
  • Organic connection between life and teaching, an educational goal that rejects the practical, top-heavy forced and cramming school.
  • A friendly and comradely relationship between teachers and students, a goal that was propagated in the youth movement under the slogan “Youth educates youth”.
  • Composition of the student body from all parts of Germany, a goal that was committed to the understanding of the regions and can be seen together with the goal of internationalism.
  • Stimulation by well-traveled visitors from home and abroad and trips to neighboring countries, a goal that underlines the international, cosmopolitan and tolerant conception of the school.
  • Ample opportunity to practice art, to do manual work and to garden, a goal that corresponds to the claim to holism, Pestalozzi's learning with “head, heart and hand” in the reform pedagogical movement.
  • Independence from daily political currents while at the same time actively participating in the events and questions of the present, a goal that corresponds to educational autonomy, the idea of an educational province, an educational sanctuary.
  • Turning away from coercion and punishment: “Achievements can only be expected from a creative child. Duty, hardship, coercion, wages and punishment may at best bear fruit in adults. The joy of creating requires joy of life and health ... "
  • Well thought-out healthy lifestyle, meat-free reform diet, vegetarian food, a goal that is based on the one hand on medical and naturopathic reasons, on the other hand on ethical and moral principles of animal welfare.
  • Methodical getting used to heat and cold, especially through frequent being naked during gymnastics, morning runs, sports and games in the sense of naturism. "In an otherwise healthy mental climate, according to our many years of experience, as well as according to the increasingly prevalent general opinion, being naked is an educational factor that should not be underestimated."
  • Creation of a youth for whom sexuality is natural but not the main interest, a goal that corresponds to the sexual reform movement according to Magnus Hirschfeld and Wilhelm Reich , which was widespread at the time .
  • Proud of your own body and joy in the well-trained and tanned bodies of your classmates, a goal that corresponds to a body-affirming and body-friendly attitude, the promotion of human dignity, self-esteem and individual autonomy.
  • Refrain from irritants and intoxicants such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee and sweets, a goal that promotes health and physical resilience.

The light school home worked according to the guidelines set up for the German high school. Primary school-age children attended the nearby village school, but enjoyed all the advantages of the home outside of school.

The intention of Dr. Following Martin Fränzel, his descendants run the Lichtheideheim on the complex (see below).

Glüsinger oven

The remains of a medieval oven in Glüsingen, the excavation of which was completed in July 1994, are no longer visible above ground. In the center of the excavation area, a thick, multilayered layer of clay was found, under which a number of fragments from the early Middle Ages were found. They mark the beginning of the kiln and probably the date the village was built. In the light of these excavation finds, the presumed equation of the place Glüsingen, mentioned for the first time in 1104/05 (and existing several times in Lower Saxony!) With the place of the same name of the municipality of Betzendorf, has been further substantiated.

Compared to the previously excavated oven findings from Northern Germany, the Glüsing specimen shows very good dating possibilities and is therefore to be regarded as a very important find place of the Middle Ages in the Lüneburg district; an era that has only been archaeologically explored to a large extent in Bardowick .

In connection with the excavation of the early medieval oven findings in Glüsingen, a number of smaller hills were also known towards the end of the nineties, which are located not far from the village on the edge of the Süsingwald. Most likely, at least one of the hills is a specimen that was included in a system of so-called border or snow hills in 1570 due to border disputes, which at the time was between the Bailiwick of Amelinghausen and the Ebstorf office , to whose monastery, based on older rights, most of the Süsingwald belonged to since the end of the 12th century. This assumption can now be regarded as confirmed by the results of the excavation. After the excavation was completed in 2001, the remainder of a stone fortification with which the edge of the mound had been secured could be documented; an almost square boulder probably served as an additional marker. Apparently the hill was built in the vicinity of older findings that were destroyed when it was built. In the heaped mound, around a dozen flakes of flint and several small ceramic shards of coarse design have so far been recovered. Readings from the immediate vicinity of the hill confirmed the assumption that these are remains of settlement ceramics (storage vessels), which so far can only generally be dated to the Iron Age. In Betzendorf itself, early medieval finds were discovered on the area of the so-called Barkhof and in its peripheral area on the so-called Ziegenberg.

The St. Peter and Paul Church with its round tower is the landmark of Betzendof. The date of construction of the fortified church was already seen around 800, but is unoccupied and indefinite. In the church there is now a walled-up secret path to the grave vault below the church. The church was also used as a noble family burial place. The Betzendorfer church tower can be assigned to the Romanesque period .

The remains of two stone graves can be viewed in Glüsingen and Betzendorf, and burial mounds from the Bronze Age can be found at various points in the boundaries of the individual villages. So far, an older Iron Age urn cemetery has been found in the districts of Glüsingen and Tellmer ; In the municipality of Betzendorf there is also an urn cemetery, originally comprising around 600 burials, near Drögennindorf.
