Wittorf is a municipality in the district of Lüneburg in Lower Saxony .

geography

The community is located south of the Elbe in the Lüneburg Heath and about 13KM northwest of the city of Lüneburg . The village has been part of the Bardowick municipality since 1974 .

history

The village emerged at the end of the first millennium AD as a two-yard estate on a Geest island at the mouth of the Ilmenau into the Elbe. Wittorf is first mentioned in an imperial document from Heinrich II dated November 2, 1004 under the name Uuitthorp , where it is attributed to Hermann Billung († 973).

In 1926 the MTV Wittorf was founded with the divisions football, marching band and gymnastics. In football, the most important game of the year is the derby against the rivals from Handorf.

In 1938 Wittorf received its coat of arms with three white fish on a red cross band in a blue field after the medieval Wittorf family, who had their ancestral home there.

The heather blossom festival has been held in Wittorf on the last weekend in August since 1955

Population development

Wittorf has 1471 inhabitants (2015) on an area of ​​12.02 km². In 2004 there were still 1210 inhabitants.
