history
The area around Rullstorf has been populated for thousands of years. During excavations by the Lower Saxony State Office for the Preservation of Monuments on the hill of the Kronsberg, the remains of a long house were discovered which, based on ceramic finds , can be dated to around 4000 years before Christ. This is the oldest documented house in what is now Lower Saxony. The excavations carried out between 1979 and 2009 showed that there has been continuous settlement near Rullstorf since the Bronze Age over the time of the Lombards and the Old Saxons .
A horse burial ground was discovered during the excavations . It is one of the largest in Germany and is considered the largest well-known late Saxon horse cemetery. 42 horses were buried on the site, usually with their heads facing south. The horse in horse grave 5075, which was dug up in 2000 and was buried with complete riding equipment as a grave gift for a stake, was, however, oriented in exactly the opposite direction. None of the other horses buried in Rullstorf were buried with saddles, bridles or other accessories. The finds allow a reconstruction of the Saxon riding equipment of the 7th century, which is shown in the German Horse Museum in Verden an der Aller.
Around the year 1150 the place Rullstorf was founded as a Rundling . The Lüneburg Landwehr , a rampart built around 1480, begins at the village . It originally reached from Rullstorf in a southerly direction via Neu Wendhausen to Deutsch Evern.
