The German Horse Museum in Verden (Aller) is the oldest horse museum in Germany.

history

The museum goes back to a hippological collection that was started around 1930 by the Verdener Heimatbund. From 1965 this collection was named the German Horse Museum as an independent institution . Originally housed in the Boeselagerchen Villa in Verden, the collection moved to the half-timbered house Strukturstrasse 7 in the old town during the time of National Socialism and in 2000 a new domicile on the Holzmarkt in the immediate vicinity of the train station: the former stables and crew buildings of the cavalry barracks (also known as the Holzmarktkaserne) , used by the Uhlan Regiment No. 14 , among others . Since 1974 there has been a cast of the statue of the famous temple guardian in front of the German Horse Museum .

exhibition

The exhibition area is divided into a 1400 m² department for permanent exhibitions and 230 m² for special exhibitions. Historical toys related to horses as well as anatomical models that also provide information about the development of the horse are shown. In addition, on the ground floor you can see objects that point to Verden as a horse town, such as old feeding cribs and a sandstone tablet from 1815, the inscription of which Gaudemus equis was once read above a Verden house entrance.

On the upper floor, the focus is on the possible uses of the horse. Several functional models give an impression of riding with different saddles and of the horses' visual abilities. Special sections of the museum are dedicated to well-known horses and riders such as the clever Hans or Josef Neckermann .

The collection also includes photographs and films by the horse photographer Wilhelm Tiedemann .

Library

In the library, books on equestrian topics are available to borrow from the city library. The Horse Museum also has an extensive photo and film archive.
