Surname

Old names of the place are 1303 Boldewinus de Botz (Lüneburg), 1304 Ottho Botze (Lüneburg), 1316 in Boitze; Slavico Sedorpe et Boetze, 1347 Conradus de Botzom (new citizens of Lüneburg), 1363 Albertus van Botzen, Henneke van Botzen (Lüneburg), 16th century Boitze.

The word botze probably contains the word “boke”, a linguistic phenomenon in which the k became z in this area. Probably an old Saxon place name * Bōk-ing- is to be assumed, in which the Low German bōk “beech” is present and in which the change from -k-> -ts - / - tz - / - z- as in the place name Boitze (Kr. Lüneburg), Boitzen (Kr. Rotenburg / Wümme) and Boitzum (Kr. Hildesheim) is to be blamed for zetazism . This is a change that has taken place in Old Low German and has left its mark on numerous place names: Celle, Zeven, Zellerfeld and others. The place name means "Buchenort".
