middle Ages

The first documentary mention as money meal took place in the year 1123. In 1263 it was mentioned as kerc money instead . According to a document dated November 22, 1313, there was a gift from the knight Lippold von Dhoren, with which he laid the foundation stone for the Kirchgellers monastery. In 1314, Duke Otto von Braunschweig and Bishop Nikolaus von Verden confirmed the establishment of the Premonstratensian monastery in Kirchgellersen. The oldest building in Kirchgellersen was built in 1559. The Kirchgellers School was instituted in 1562/63. Kirch Gildersen was founded in 1585 on the SAXONIA IMPERIOR ET MEKLENBORG DVC card. recorded by Gerhard Mercator . During the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648) the St. Laurentius Church was looted several times and the rectory burned down.

Modern times

In 1704 the place is shown on a map as "Kirch Geldersen". In 1829 a savings bank was founded. A fire engine was purchased in 1880. The Kirchgellersen volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1881.

Place name

The old names of the place are around 1123 Geldersen, around 1180 Chelderhorses, 1229–35 Geldersen, 1244 Geldersen, 1263 Kercgeldereses, 1267 Gelderdissen, Gelderhorses, 1271 Geldersen, 1304 Westerghelderhorses, 1326 Ghelderßen, 1326 Gheldereses and around 1326 Sudergeleses.

The place name Kirchgellersen cannot be separated from Südgellersen and Westgellersen. The old documents require the basic form “Gelderd-es-husen”. There was an early weakening from "-husen" to "-sen" (Adelebsen, Erbsen, Holtensen). In the basic word there is "-husen" (old plural for "hus" house), in the defining word a so-called personal name. The place name could mean Geldherdes Siedlung, which stands for a settlement of a man whose name could have been Geld-hard, -herd. The personal name contains Germanic “money” in the sense of “worth” and “hard, robust, strong”.
