The computer program Statistiklabor (Statistical Lab) is an exploratory and interactive tool box for statistical analysis and visualization of data. With a very clear approach and a number of functions, it supports in particular the training in statistics in the economic and social sciences . The program was developed by the Center for Digital Systems at the Free University of Berlin . Since September 27, 2006 and version 3.5, the statistics laboratory has been available as free software in source code under GPL . Previous versions were freeware for non-commercial use. Statistics laboratory has not been further developed since 2011.

Simple or complex statistical problems can be simulated, processed and individually solved with the help of the statistics laboratory. The program can be expanded using external libraries. These libraries can also be used to adapt to individual and local requirements, such as individual statistics courses for specific user groups. The diverse graphic display variants enable clear visualizations of the underlying data.

The statistics laboratory is the successor to statistics interactive! In contrast to the commercial SPSS , the statistics laboratory is didactically motivated. It is aimed primarily at statistical laypeople. In order to keep the barriers to entry for students in statistics as low as possible, the statistics laboratory combines data sets, frequency tables , random numbers , matrices, etc. in a user-friendly virtual worksheet that enables users to carry out calculations, analyzes, simulations and data manipulations in an exploratory and playful way.

For the mathematical calculations, the statistics laboratory uses the R programming language , a free implementation of the S language developed by Bell Laboratories for processing statistical data. The R-Project is constantly being developed by the R-Community, a worldwide community of volunteer developers.
