At the end of the 1960s / beginning of the 1970s , the municipality of Vögelsen was to become a district of Lüneburg. Vögelsen was against it, however, as it was just growing. So the municipalities of Bardowick , Mechtersen and Vögelsen decided to merge to form a joint municipality. But this was not welcomed by the Lüneburg district. It was only when the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior approved this that the integrated community could be founded. On July 1, 1969 , the joint community was finally founded by Bardowick, Mechtersen and Vögelsen. On March 1, 1974 , Wittorf , St. Dionys , Barum , Handorf and Radbruch became members.

At the end of 2003, various groups were formed from the individual volunteer fire brigades of the entire municipality. Bardowick provides the train Bardowick place as a priority defense. The Mechtersen, Radbruch and Vögelsen fire brigades form the West train , and the Northeast train is made up of the Handorf, Wittorf, Barum, Horburg and St. Dionys fire departments . They provide protective fire protection and general help in the joint community.
